Game Of Thrones Dire Wolf Back From Extinction

In a groundbreaking development, Colossal Biosciences, a Texas-based biotech firm, has announced the birth of three genetically engineered wolf pups—Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi—designed to resemble the extinct dire wolf. These animals were created by modifying gray wolf DNA with genetic material from fossilized dire wolf remains, displaying physical traits akin to the ancient species.

The dire wolf, a formidable predator that roamed North America during the Pleistocene epoch, went extinct approximately 12,500 years ago. Colossal’s endeavor marks a significant milestone in de-extinction science, showcasing the potential of advanced genetic engineering techniques.

However, this achievement has sparked debates among experts. While the engineered wolves exhibit physical similarities to dire wolves, they are not genetically identical. The IUCN Species Survival Commission Canid Specialist Group has stated that these animals are neither true dire wolves nor accurate proxies, emphasizing that creating phenotypic replicas does not equate to restoring the original species.

Colossal Biosciences is also exploring the de-extinction of other species, including the woolly mammoth and passenger pigeon, using similar genetic tools. These efforts aim to raise public interest and potentially restore ecological balance, though concerns remain about the compatibility of revived species with modern ecosystems.
